Smooth Jazz, a subgenre of jazz, is known for its smooth melodic lines, simple to complex rhythms and irregular beats. It is also an outgrowth of soul jazz and jazz fusion, but its musical nuances are derived from R&B and pop music. That is why Saxophonist Duane Parham" lives and breathes it." It is in his blood.

Forerunner of Smooth Jazz is Jazz Fusion

Jazz fusion, a forerunner of smooth jazz, was developed in the 1960s and is known for combining jazz harmonies with rock music, funk and rhythm and blues. Arrangements range from a single key or chord to elaborate chords, unconventional meter signatures or melodies. Included in the varied instruments used by smooth jazz artists to produce the sound, are the electric guitar, electric piano, synthesizer and bass guitar. This gives the music an engaging sound!

Electric guitars are an asset to the smooth jazz sound.

Smooth Jazz Artists by Meta Rose Art & Biz

Meta Rose Art & Biz has a long list of great smooth jazz artists but will only list a few of them here. Four musicians are: Grover Washington Jr., George Benson, Bob James and David Sanborn. Paralleling them as great smooth jazz saxophonist are: Mindo Abair, Gerald Albright, Paula Atherton and Walter Beasley. These musicians have and will continue to leave their imprints on smooth jazz for centuries to come.

Incidentally, Duane Parham considers Gerald Albright his idol, and when talking with him at a Michigan festival, Parham maintains Albright epitomizes humility and gratitude in spite of his world notoriety.
